You can find such physicians and surgeons by checking your local phone book or searching local online directories listings for more information and assistance. Find out how long they have been in practice, what schooling they’ve had, what their clinical hours are, and what their availability is. Don’t be afraid to ask for references and get help from health care consultants. Find out if the doctor is properly licensed and has a clean record. You can go online to research DPM group association backgrounds thoroughly. It may be a wise choice to find a general practitioner near you, rather than far away so you can get to him or her quickly and easily in the event of a podiatric emergency. Once you have decided what kind of physicians or surgeons you want, be sure to visit with a few doctors before committing. Assess the appearance of the medical clinic, hospital or private practice, making sure the building is well maintained and clean. Meet with several staff members and make note if they are timely and well groomed. Make sure the facility is clean as well, and staff members are courteous. It is not uncommon for podiatrists and foot doctors to share offices in podiatry groups. Often podiatry groups consist of several podiatrists who may have several podiatry specialties. Some podiatry groups have podiatric surgeons as members and most have podiatrists who specialize in orthopedic shoes and orthopedic insole prescriptions. Often when there is a foot emergency a person's podiatrist is not available, but if that podiatrist is part of a podiatry group, then another member of the group will be able to take care of the emergency. Some podiatry groups are based in podiatry clinics and foot medicine clinics. Some podiatry associations are loose affiliations while others are businesses run by more than one podiatrist.
